A bit of Abaco history 


The first inhabitants of Abaco were the Lucayan Indians. Unfortunately they were captured as slaves by the Spanish after Columbus discovered the Bahamas, and they were exterminated by 1520. It took 130 years before the next known permanent settlements. The pirates might have had temporary settlements in order to do their pirating on English and Spanish ships. 

In 1593 a Spanish fleet of 17 ships was wrecked off Abaco. English and French pirates and freebooters had begun preying on Spanish vessels north of Cuba. Ownership of the Bahamas passed back and forth between Spain and Great Britain for 150 years, until British ownership was established by treaty in 1783, when Great Britain ceded East Florida to Spain, receiving the Bahamas in return.

In August of 1783, about 1500 Loyalists left New York and moved to Abaco. They settled on a small, sandy harbor near Treasure Cay. They planned and built the town of Carleton. Disputes over food distribution, and having been misled about the resources available, separated this group in two. The second part founded a rival town near Marsh Harbour called Maxwell. Other settlements on the islands were Green Turtle Cay, Man-o-War Cay, and Sandy Point. In the 1790s, a group of Loyalists from the Carolinas arrived on the islands via Florida, founding the isolated settlement of Cherokee Sound.

 

Abaco Today


Calm waters, warm breezes, panoramic beauty, a relaxed pace and informal life style make this 120-mile–long chain of islands attracts travelers from around the world. Those who prefer to explore by land will find championship golf courses on Treasure Cay, charming colonial towns on Green Turtle Cay and Elbow Cay, and countless hotels, restaurants and bars are spread throughout The Abacos.  Abaco is a boating and sailing paradise and boast important coral reef areas, barrier-island terrestrial habitats and notable species of birds.

The Abacos are a group of islands stretching over 650 square miles. The coastlines have beach, rocks, bays, coves and protected harbors that feature full-service marinas and resorts. Great Abaco Island with Marsh Harbour, the “Capital” of Abaco serve as the "mainland." The international airport is only an 8 minute drive from town. Marsh Harbour has its own government building, a small hospital (clinic really) a lively downtown area with banks, restaurants, liquor stores and shops, while the harbor area is especially attractive, with several marinas and protected docking for boats lying for anchor. Here you’ll find hotels, resorts, shops, restaurants and bars as well. 

 

Treasure Cay


Treasure Cay is located 30 minutes north of Marsh Harbour, and is not really a cay, but a peninsula. They have miles of pristine beaches, (voted one of the top 10 in the world), beach bars, a marina, several restaurants, their own little airport, golf course and beautiful beachfront homes. Treasure Cay is known for its huge selection of condominiums as well. Treasure Cay with all its single family homes and condos is a popular place for vacationers, and the real estate is booming. The market for vacant land on Treasure Cay is also good. 

 

Hope Town on Elbow Cay


Hope Town was once the “capital” of Abaco. Hope Town is an old English loyalist Settlement, and today you’ll find charming houses and narrow streets in the Settlement, mostly reserved for pedestrians, and you’ll notice that the colorful houses are well maintained and often rented to tourists. Hope Town is most famous for its popular landmark, the 89 feet tall candy striped lighthouse, which is actually still working. You’ll find a wide selection of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, gift shops, a museum, a sail club and beautiful resorts on Elbow Cay. The ocean side beach in the Settlement is great for snorkeling just off the beach, for instance by Hope Town Harbour Lodge. You’ll find that the turnover of homes for sale is better in Hope Town than many other areas in Abaco. Outside of town you have popular areas like White Sound and Dorros Cove with beautiful Tahiti Beach at the south end of Elbow Cay. You get to Elbow Cay by taking the Hope Town ferry. There are several beautiful vacant lots for sale on Elbow Cay still. 

 

Green Turtle Cay


The settlement is called New Plymouth is also founded by English loyalist. You can read all about it in the local museum. In the settlement you’ll find beautifully preserved colorful colonial architecture. The quaint, picturesque village can be walked in less than 15 minutes end to end. There are hardware stores, gift shops and food markets. Choose from 9 places (spread all over the island) to eat lunch or dinner. The Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden featuring Bronze busts of early settlers, is in the middle of town. Other parts of Green Turtle Cay has resorts, lots of beach front vacation homes and stunning, white beaches. There are still available lots on Green Turtle Cay. There are no less than four churches on the island. You get to Green Turtle Cay by taking a ferry from the dock a little north of Treasure Cay. 

 

Great Guana Cay


Guana Cay is famous for infamous Nipper’s Beach Bar with their Sunday Pig Roast. You don’t see them roasting the pig, but you can eat as much as you want. While watching people dance on the tables or on the dance floor dressed in only swim-wear. Guana Cay has a magnificent 7 mile long beach, but you can only access 4-miles of it. A large reef way out there (too far to swim to snorkel) is protecting the beach. The last 2.5 miles of the beach (and the island) is closed off to the public and reserved for Baker’s Bay gated community for the rich and famous. They party at Nipper’s too. At the south end of the island is Orchid Bay, which is also a 1 mile long gated community closed off to the public. But you can walk the beach of Orchid Bay all you want, as long as you stay below the high tide mark. The settlement is located around the harbor, a good place to dock your boat if you don’t want to dock it at Orchid Bay Marina, a full service marina with fuel. Guana Cay has several restaurants and bars, gift shops, a liquor store and a grocery store. Guana Cay is a popular tourist destination with lots of vacation homes. You can easily snag a beautiful water front piece of land here as well. The rental is really easy on Guana Cay, due to the amount of tourists and due to staff at Baker’s Bay who need accommodation. You get to Guana Cay by taking the ferry from Mangoe’s Marina in Marsh Harbour.  

 

Man-O-War Cay


This island was settled by loyalists as early as 1798. They lived of the sea and what farming could give them. But boat building is what Man-O-War Cay is really famous for. The industrious people living there have built boats for centuries. Even today the boat building and boat repair is flourishing. This used to be a “dry” island where no alcohol was served, but now you can buy at least wine and beer with your food at one restaurant there. The charming street that goes along the harbor features several gift shops, ice cream store, a lunch restaurant, and then the sail shop at the end, where you can buy one of the famous canvas bags. They also have their own museum and a modern coffee shop with home baked goods. You will get the impression that much of this islands history is still alive, preserved and celebrated by the residents. Three churches serve the spiritual needs of the population. There are a few vacation homes on this island for people wanting to stay on this well organized cay with a beautiful beach. You can easily buy a home in the Settlement or outside on Man-O-War. A few pieces of Vacant land is also available. 

You can get to Man-O-War by taking the ferry from Marsh Harbour on the main ferry dock.
